"Hoax" first appears as a verb (OED 1796).  Here is an antedating:

1794 Mountmorres of Castlemorres, Hervey Redmond Morres, Viscount _The
prodigal: or, marriage a-la-mode_ 90 (ECCO)  To see a lawyer thus
_hoaxed_, and running the gauntlet, is no bad fun.
