LSA Committee on Ethnic Diversity in Linguistics (CEDL)
Minority Travel Fund

Minority students who are LSA members and have a paper accepted for presentation
at the LSA Annual Meeting or any of the concurrent meetings may apply for
travel funds (up to $500). For the purpose of this fund, the term 'minority' is
defined as "members of racial and ethnic groups in the US that have been
historically disenfranchised in the US and are traditionally underrepresented
in higher education in general, and in linguistics in particular.” Application
consists of a letter from the applicant indicating minority status and
estimated travel costs, a copy of the abstract, and a brief letter from the
student’s chair or advisor indicating applicant's standing and how the home
institution will support their participation. All materials should be sent to:
Tracey L. Weldon, English Department, The University of South Carolina,
Columbia, South Carolina 29208; (803) 777-2074 (phone); (803) 777-9064 (fax);
weldont at gwm.sc.edu. The deadline for receipt of materials is October 31, 2004.

LSA Committee on Ethnic Diversity in Linguistics (CEDL)
Minority Scholar Survey and Mentoring Program

The Linguistic Society of America’s Committee on Ethnic Diversity in Linguistics
(CEDL) is conducting a survey of minority scholars in the field to determine
how the recruitment and retention of minority linguists might be improved. We
are, therefore, asking undergraduate students, graduate students, and faculty
members in linguistics who are members of minority groups in the US to
participate in this survey. For the purposes of this survey, the term
'minority' refers to "members of racial and ethnic groups in the US that have
been historically disenfranchised in the US and are traditionally
underrepresented in higher education in general, and in linguistics in
particular." This includes, but is not limited to African Americans, Mexican
Americans, Puerto Ricans, and Native Americans. To download the survey, please
visit the CEDL website at
http://www.lsadc.org/committees/index.php?aaa=ethnic.htm .

The completed survey should be returned no later than Dec. 1, 2004 to
mreynolds at lsadc.org or by snail mail to Maggie Reynolds; The Linguistic Society
of America; 1325 18th Street, NW, Suite 211; Washington, D.C. 20036-6501. If
you have any questions regarding the survey itself, please contact Tracey
Weldon, the 2004 CEDL chair, at weldont at gwm.sc.edu.

CEDL is also organizing a mentoring system for minorities in linguistics. If you
would like to be a mentor, please contact Ana Celia Zentella at
azentella at ucsd.edu. If you would like to receive mentoring, please check the
CEDL website at www.lsadc.org/web2/committeesfr.htm for more details as the
system gets developed.
