The OEFDA has the usual stories for "screwdriver." The 1952 Chicago Tribune
article is of great interest. The 1948 Zanesville Signal piece looks
legitimate, but Newspaperarchive won't open the page! You can read the issue by itself,
but I don't have the time now to download every newspaper page.

NO PLACE TO HIDE
ART RYON. Los Angeles Times (1886-Current File). Los Angeles, Calif.: Feb 5,
1952. p. A5 (1 page):
While concurring wholly with Tim Turner's lament on these pages about the
recent practice of substituting vodka for gin in Martinis, we regret that he
didn't go further. Do you realize, Tim, that the latest craze in the amateur set
is vodka and orange juice?

Istanbul Busy and Bustling Modern City
Chicago Daily Tribune (1872-1963). Chicago, Ill.: Apr 27, 1952. p. SW_C5 (1
page) :
The Park is close to the shopping district, serves excellent food, and exudes
an authentic continental atmosphere. (Warning: Partake sparingly of the
favorite drink in the Park bar, which is called a "screwdriver" and is composed of
equal parts of vodka and orange juice.)

A TRAVELER'S DIARY; In Turkey, the Coffee Tastes Like Boiled Topsoil, and a
Screwdriver Is the Poison Served at Bars
HORACE SUTTON. Los Angeles Times (1886-Current File). Los Angeles, Calif.:
Apr 17, 1955. p. E11 (1 page):
ISTANBUL - Anybody can talk turkey in TUrkey, especially with the help of a
screwdriver.

A screwdriver is the local poison, a mixture of vodka and orange juice, which
everybody drinks here because a "viski soda" costs $2.99. Just ask for a
skrudrayt, which is the local way of saying it. Very easy, too, especially after
drinking one.

Black Market Money Replaces Slave Girls in Ankara Trading; Moved From
Fleshpots Origin of That Drink Noted Conquerors There
By Thomas Wolfe Staff Reporter. The Washington Post, Times Herald
(1959-1973). Washington, D.C.: Dec 6, 1959. p. A12 (1 page):
_Origin of That Drink_
It was in Ankara during World War II that a group of American fliers invented
a drink called the "screwdriver" - orange juice and vodka - because they
couldn't stand Turkish vodka. This was a slur on Anakara's estimable cuisine,
which at its worst is never so dreadful as the screwdriver.
