Antedating? of "shot his wad" 1896

I believe that particular sense of "wad" derives from the phrase, rather than the other way around.

Isn't wad a synonym for (noun) ejaculate? Is that where Johnny "Wad" Holmes
(male porn star) got his nickname? Thus making sexual meanings more
appropriate.
