What about Hinky Dink McKenna and Bathhouse John, major machine pols of the
1880's in Chicago.  Hinky Dink claimed to have invented the "Mickey Finn" at
his saloon the "Working Man's Friend".  Supposedly there was a sign in the
bar saying, "Bet you can't drink one"

I may have the dates and the spelling a little wrong, but he was certainly
famous in Chicago

Hinky Dinky was the supermarket of my youth in Lincoln, NE. They've gone out
of business (or changed their name) in Lincoln.
