Where is this list?
The first word I noticed coming out of nowhere into
widespread use was "paradigm" in the 70's. Of course
it could have been in widespread use before I noticed
it. Usage seems to have dropped off.
Another is "egregious". Popped up several years ago,
and it seems no one uses "blatant" anymore. Are the
thesauruses in word processors responsible?
A recent pop word, at least locally, is
"schadenfreude". Never noticed before about six
months ago, and now it is frequently in the local
"alternative" weekly press. It was a word-of-the-day
on A.Word.A.Day ("Wordsmith" <wsmith at wordsmith.org>)
not long ago, and maybe that was the catalyst for this
recent spate of use. Anyone else seeing this word
more frequently?
