toadpoles

I saw this word and decided to look around for it, as it was entirely new to
me although completely obvious in meaning. It seems to be standard in
West Pacific English, and treated as a pun in the other site. (I meant
that as "cite"; NatSpeak took it the other way, which in this situation is
equally correct and has the identical reference!)

Fish who eat toadpoles die. Animals who eat toad adults die. The museums
have plenty of snakes preserved in jars which were killed by toad toxin so
fast, the toad is still in their mouths unswallowed. Even small amounts of
water, such as a pet's water dish, can be fouled by toadpoles and adults.
When the pet comes along to drink from it's dish, it becomes sick. Local
vets report that a couple dogs a month are brought in ill just from mouthing
toads.

LOL

*Every* Queensland home has at least one toadpole. They're used to swat
errant toad over the fence into the neighbours yard.

Magazines are devoted to the sport of toad poling, and afficionados spend
thousands on the latest graphite shafted poles from Slazenger, Yonix and
others. Peronally, I prefer the sand wedge style, because you get better
loft and can sometimes sling a toad right on their roof - or better still,
into the guttering.

Sometimes this leads to harsh words as formerly friendly neighbours feud
over the numbers of dead and festering toads lying against the walls of
their homes.

Not, I might add, that they mind the dead toads. The issue is the *score*
Being such competetive folk we can't help scoring, the winner being the one
with the least dead toads in his yard. It's considered cheating to hit a
dead toad back, and that's what causes the arguments.

Some folk just can't help themselves

Looking at the Finer Details
Tadpoles vs. Toadpoles
These can get a little tricky to identify and if you're not sure, we
recommend that you leave them alone. If there is any possibility that they
might be Australian frog tadpoles, it's better to let them metamorph and
then identify them. There are some subtle distinguishing characteristics
between toadpoles and tadpoles, however, so if you're good at observing fine
details, you'll be able to pick out which is which.

Henry Pond the Poet
Dick King-Smith, Illustrated by Russell Ayto Hodder

Henry Pond is a toad with a huge reputation, talked about with pride by
toads far and wide! Ever since he was a 'toadpole' Henry has been creating
and reciting poetry. One evening, at a poetry recital, Henry notices the
most beautiful female toad he has ever seen - Victoria Garden-Pool. But,
unlike the others Victoria is not in the least bit impressed by Henry's
poetry, in fact she finds it boring! Victoria is more interested in Larry
Lake, a large toad, a toad of action, not words. What will poor, love-struck
Henry do? Another amusing animal story from the ever-popular Dick
King-Smith.
