"The" Philippines

Usage of "the" in place names is not necessarily
fixed.  Throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries,
the big lake here in Utah was Great Salt Lake.  It is
now almost always called the Great Salt Lake, which
for some reason annoys me very much.
