"Kill your television" - before 1989?

I've seen "kill your television" bumper stickers for several years now,
and remember the song by Ned's Atomic Dustbin. It looks like that single
was released in 1990. The earliest citation for the phrase in Google
groups is as a Usenet sig in May, 1989.

Did Ned's Atomic Dustbin coin this phrase, with the sig coming from a fan
who knew the song before the record came out? If not, how far back does
it go? The phrase has certainly transcended the band's fame.
