cavalry/ Calvary

But Southerners seem to be doing most of the confusing. For many of us, the distinction is so obvious that when I first mentioned to a prominent colleague that the replacement of "cavalry" by "Calvary" (though not vice versa) was an incredibly common feature of Southern speech, I was met with gales of skepticism.

But history has vindicated me.

If you grew up in a southern Baptist or Church of Christ or any of a
number of other Protestant groups, the hymn "Calvary" makes this an easy
pair to keep straight.
