Add me to those who have only used the one-syllable form of Shays's. But,
it is interesting to note that in the New Century Cyclopedia of Names, the
pronunciation is two syllables. The college dictionaries include Shays's
Rebellion (or Shays' Rebellion) as a hidden entry within the entry for
Daniel Shays. There in lies, I believe, the difference. Those who use
the one syllable form would spell it Shays' while those who would use a
two-syllable form would write it Shays'.
