"Queen Apple" at New Orleans (1919)

It's no doubt a coincidence, because that sounds so much more authoritative than "Who the hell knows?"

  "Queen Apple, however, is an odd name for a horse, just as "Big Apple" is an odd name for a racing circuit.  It would be easy (too easy, natch) to fantasize an inglorious lexical genius, proximately inspired by familiarity with the animal's name, creating "the Big Apple" right there where O'Connor was standing in 1919.

  Of course, this charming hypothesis must never get on the Net, because it could become the hottest "true" explanation since that bordello thing.
