The volume in question was _Studies out in left field: Defamatory
essays presented to James D. McCawley on the occasion of his 33rd or
34th birthday_, edited by the famous linguistic Arnold M. Zwicky et
al. and published (by Linguistic Research, Inc., Edmonton and
Champaign, 1971) with a magically disintegrating binding, so I think
we can say it was a paperback that rather rapidly morphed into a
stack of sheets unstapled together.
