ProQuest gives us 1865 citations for "Hunkee Doree." Dan Bryant performed
"Hunkee Doree, the Live Injun" at Bryant's Minstrels, 472 Broadway, New York
City.
...
But what does it all mean?
...
Previously, Lighter's HDAS had speculated that the term came from "Japanese
Tommy." I checked those cites and find no connection. We know, only, that the
term was used in NYC in 1865.
...
"Hunkee" or "Hunky" needs no explanation. New York had it's "Hunker"
political party since the 1840s.
...
It should be noted that, just down the block from Bryant's, at Union Square,
was the well known Maison Doree. Yes, that's Dor-AY, but it's easy to see it
rhyme with "Hunkee."
...
Was this slang term influenced by a French restaurant?

Let me begin with the Maison Doree, in the opinion of many _gourmets_ the
best restaurant in Paris.
