GAT, the guy who still looks things up in books, notes that there is an
article on the Burma-Shave roadside advertisements in the St. James
Encyclopedia of Popular Culture (Detroit : St. James Press, c2000).
This states that the ads were put up in 43 states, between 1925 and
1963 and quotes 4 or 5 of the poems, none of them the ones remembered
by us'n in the postings of this past weekend. The bibliography cites 2
books that are to be found in better libraries everywhere:
he Verse by the Side of the Road: The Story of the Burma-Shave Signs
and Jingles, by Frank Rowsome, Jr., in print from Penguin for $12.95
Burma-Shave: The Rhymes, the Signs, the Times, by Bill Vossler, in
print from North Star Press of St. Cloud for $14.95
In this instance I am abashed to say that the library here is a grossly
inferior library, since we have neither.
