demopop is not in OED -- apparently a combination of populist and
Democratic parties.

Nebraska | Lincoln | The Evening News | 1894-10-06 p. 4 col 1. Untitled.
"The straight democrats are reported to have condemned the action of the
secretary of state in refusing to put their ticket on the official
ballot instead of the soft shell nominees of the regular demopop
convention."

"Chess Notes" Brooklyn Eagle, 1896 Aug 13 p. 5 col 6.
" "Why is the demopop candidate, Bryan, like a bad chess problem?" is a
conundrum now going the rounds of the chess clubs. Ans. "Because he has
a dual mate!" "

"Col. Eddy Addressed an Enthusiastic Audience"
Los Angeles Times; Aug 21, 1896; pg. 11 col 3.
"Touching, then, upon the money question, as that is the hobby of both
the Demopops and the Popocrats, although it is not the real issue of the
campaign, he gave them the history of the white metal from its first
introduction into this country, taking occasion at that time to pay his
respects to the terrible (?) [sic. -- Mullins] crime of 1873, of which
the opposing forces have had so much to say in their endeavor to cloud
the real issue -- that of protection to American industries."

popocrat 4 Aug 1896 in OED

North Carolina | Statesville | The Landmark | 1892-11-17 p. 2. col 3.
"A Long Lease of Power," Washington, Nov 14, 1892
"What did I tell you about the popocrat "leaders," so called, and the
staunch and true farmers of North Carolina?"
