"MOSCOW ON THE HUDSON" & "RED SQUARE WEST"
...
Slantpoint (a right wing NYC blog) uses "Moscow on the Hudson" today, along
with a few others ("Red Square West," "Belly of the Beast," "Hillary's
Haunting Grounds," and "Howard Dean's Hideout"). Is the HDAS interest in "Red
Square West"?
...
The Slantpoint blog is, as can be expected from this language, more than a
little overheated, but not bad. It always has the latest news.

Beautiful Young Republican Irony

The national convention for Young Republican clubs assembled in "What Happens
in Vegas, stays in Vegas" last weekend, and no, I am not here to report any
juicy Page Six details. But I am here to point out the irony of the awards
dished out this year.
NYC's own _Young Republican club_ (http://www.nyyrc.com/) got top honors
for "Best Large Club," "Best Event" (with the NYSYR, for the Convention Events,
held August 30-September 1, 2004) and "YR Woman of the Year" (Kim Morella).
Now, ordinarily any club - political or otherwise - from NYC would naturally
be assumed to have high membership numbers and activity based purely on
regional population. But for politics? This is NYC we're talking about. The Belly
of the Beast. Moscow on the Hudson. Red Square West. Hillary's Haunting
Grounds and Howard Dean's Hideout.
So really, for the NYC YRs to grab these top honors is a testament to the
great work the club has been doing for the last few years. Compared to Red state
clubs, such a force coming out of NYC has to say something for the passion
and heart of Republicans, even when surrounded by Blue.
I'm a member of this club, and honored to be associated with such great
activists. Congrats YRs!

OT: MY "BIG APPLE" CAMPAIGN

Barry, may I suggest that you post the official name and mailing address of

There were two "real Republican" challengers to Michael Bloomberg for the
Republican nomination for mayor, but one (Steve Shaw) collected only 2,500 of
the required 7,500 signatures and has dropped out, despite the fact that he
announced his candidacy a full year before mine (June 2004). The other
challenger (Tom Ognibene) is about 2,000 signatures short of the minimum and probably
won't make it.
...
So it looks like I'll be teaming up with a popular incumbent billionaire
mayor, which has its advantages.
...
I had to get 4,000 Republican signatures, and it looks like I'm going to file
6,000, and that should be enough. There is no September primary for me, and
I go straight to November.
...
I'll need all the help I can get, from web designers, to t-shirt designers
(give $100 and get a Big Apple t-shirt), to people who can fundraise, to donors
(give $1,000 or so and get the OXFORD ENCYCLOPEDIA OF FOOD AND DRINK IN
AMERICA), to people who are willing to make local phone calls and discuss local
issues (I'll rely on these people in selecting the 600 community board
members).

You can contact me now at _Bapopik at aol.com_ (mailto:Bapopik at aol.com) , but
I've also added the screen name _electbarrypopik at aol.com_
(mailto:electbarrypopik at aol.com) . My FDR Station box is P.O. Box 7076, New York, NY 10150, or you
can use my address at 225 East 57th Street, Apt. 7P, New York, NY 10022.

Donations (from individuals and not corporations) can be accepted up to
$3,850. If the individual is from Manhattan, under the absurd campaign finance
laws, that gets match 4-to-1. So $3,850 becomes $19,250. Just six people can
result in over $100,000.

BASEBALL:
...
New York City is the birthplace of modern rules baseball (1845), so I
suggested a charity Republican-Democrat softball game, such as the one they've
played for almost 50 years in Washington. The worthy "charity" I selected could
be the Board of Elections, that has been required to purchase expensive new
voting machines. (There was a national election in 2000, and Florida--it's a
long story.) I sent e-mails all over the place to organize the charity event,
and almost no one replied.

Some guy (David Russell) from Columbia University has called and wants to
"follow me around" to see how the Big Apple guy actually does this kind of
thing. My friends think he is a spy--hey, I just started! I ain't good enough for
a spy!
...
I've also started a relationship (with a woman of Dominican descent), which
is good, but you should see some of the people on the campaign trail! Isn't
this the party of the "big tent"??
