What might be the origin of "He's got a Piece of Bread and Cheese in his
Head", meaning "he's drunk"?
I note that Benjamin Franklin, speaking of his fellow compositors at
Watts's printing house in London, wrote of "their muddling Breakfast of
Beer and Bread and Cheese" (Autobiography, ed. Labaree et al, 1964, page
101). Does that provide any clues?
