COKE in the Maryland

My grandparents, north Georgia 1881-1967, always called Coca-Cola "dope". I
was told Coke got that name because the orginal formula contained an extract
from the coca bean. I haven't heard anyone call it "dope" for many years.

"Coke" for soft drinkin general is alive and well in East Tennessee. It is
virtually the only word I hear for it.

The synonymous "dope," however, seems to be on the way out used anymore -
perhaps for obvious reasons.
