Don't forget the Devil's Dictionary, by Ambrose Bierce. Last sentence
of the entry under "Dullard": "The intellectual centre of the race is
somewhere about Peoria, Illinois, but the New England Dullard is the
most shockingly moral." Peoria's reputation is obviously of some
antiquity.
