Mother's Day is a kind of devil's bargain for chefs: It's the biggest dine-out day of the year but chefs are forced to cook the same stodgy breakfast dishes every time. This year, they're trying to keep things interesting by tossing chipotle peppers, duck eggs and caviar into ubiquitous eggs Benedict.
Ironically, according to one version of the legend, the recipe was invented in the 1890s when a Mr. and Mrs. Benedict griped at Delmonico's restaurant in New York that there was nothing new on the menu. To pacify them, the chef created the dish that has gone on to bore generations of chefs.

GIANTS (continued)

26 May 1885, New York Mail and Express, "THE NEW YORKS IN THE FIELD," pg. 3, col. 4:
The first meeting between the Phillies and New Yorks takes place in this city on June 2, and will be watched with great interest, as everybody, in both this city and Philadelphia, will be anxious to see how the club from the City of Brotherly Love will hold out against the New York giants.

Another great weekend.

FRED SHAPIRO QUOTATION--I loooked through the 300+ pages of CONFESSIONS OF JULIA JOHNSTONE and didn't see the quotation. I'll try to look again. A page number would help.
...
I attended the Metropolitan Republican Club Ball on Thursday and met the mayor, and on Friday I was really tired or doing the usual parking tickets. On one ticket was written "Ticket ripped up and thrown on the ground." The woman told me, "That's not true! I threw it in his face!" I found her guilty on ten tickets, and she went nuts. We had to call 911. And the Help Center manager looked at me, and I said yeah, it's my fault. And you take crap for an hour, and no one presses charges because it didn't happen in front of the police, and I would have to file something, and who am I to press charges? And that was the morning, and it happened again in the afternoon, too, after I found someone guilty on two tickets.
...
So my computer is still being "fixed" at COMP USA all these weeks, so after going craxy not finding the Fred SHapiro quote, I walked downtown to Best Buy on West 23rd and bought a new Toshiba. It comes with subcriptions to Sports Illustrated and Entertainment Weekly, and rebates, and a service contract, and it took the guy three tries to download the anti-virus software.
...
I'm about to leave Best Buy, and a guy asks:
...
"Is this a gift for mom?"
...
"No."
...
"You got something for mom, right?"
...
"No."
...
"Why didn't you get anything for mom?"
...
(Pause.)
"She's dead."
...
More parking tickets on Monday, and you can be sure life's not getting any better.
