Across the road

Just heard on WFMT in Chicago in a British (Scots, I think) interview
with a conductor. They were talking about conducting to accompany a
film (and comparing it to conducting to accompany fireworks)--for
which he usually uses a "click track" and he said this was the first
time he had done it in the states, but had often done it "across the
road". I am guessing this means, across the ocean.
