"Invented words" vs. fake words?

A discussion of the difference between invented words and fake words
would be interesting.  For example, is "Nihilartikel", which may have
been invented by the author of a Wikipedia article on the subject,
invented or faked?  If it was invented for a purpose, the Wikipedia
rule that invented words cannot be used in Wikipedia articles seems
cruel.  And even if Nihilartikel began as a fake word, once it is
used sufficiently doesn't it become invented (that is, coined and real)?

(Please do not discuss Nihilartikel again, but generalize!)
