OED lacks the frequent and much despised sense, "admiration by the public, as for a popular celebrity."

Here's a decades-old cite, which I have little doubt will turn out to be rather "late" :

1943  Charles O'Neal & DeWitt Bodeen _The Seventh Victim_ (film) : After all the adulation and good reviews ? I'd give anything to have written that book.
