I also find this puzzling; I know that Johnny Moss is widely
described as the championship winner of that first WSOP freeze-out
tournament in 1971 (and is so described e.g. by James McManus in the
wonderful _Positively Fifth Street_). Maybe no belt was awarded back
then, though.
