Does anyone out there know where mouldy fig came from as a term of
derogation for people who like to play old time jazz came from?

Why mouldy and why fig?

The most interesting thing about this from my point of view as a person who
plays old time hillbilly and other types of no longer current music is the
reason that those who play or recreate old types of jazz should be singled
out as beyond the pale for having done so while those who like myself like
to recreate earlier musical forms in other gendres do not suffer from this
form of discrimination,
