It's said that the best way to get correct information on the Net is to
give incorrect information -- which will then be corrected. So: Here's
my amateur opinions:
As I understand it, the dialects of New York City, New Orleans, Boston,
and Baltimore have certain features in common.
They have two other things in common: 1) They've been major seaports,
which probably meant they got influences from Britain and from each
other. 2) They got a number of Irish immigrants.
I would think there's some connection.
