19 March 1893, Chicago Daily Tribune, pg. 36:
"Origin of the Word "Socdollager."
A writer in the March _Atlantic_ gives this as the origin of the slang word
"socdollager," which was current some time ago.

Already passe in 1893? Perhaps, but it was still occasionally heard in my
childhood in NE in the '30s & '40s. The funny papers *might* have
contributed to its survival. The meaning as something settling a matter was
still intact.
