Take a shower/have a shower

I grew up in NYC, apparently saying "have a haircut" without thinking
about it. About 45 years ago, I said so, and was "corrected" by a
friend, who claimed one said "take a haircut" and "have my hair
cut". He had grown up in Ohio or Indiana, if I remember correctly.
