Google Books shows:

"Texas, with peace, could exist without the United States, but the United States can not, without great hazard to the security of their institutions, exist without Texas." In Houston's letter to General Andrew Jackson, written at Washington[-on-the-Brazos], Texas, February 16, 1844.

>From _Life and Select Literary Remains of Sam Houston of Texas_, ed. William Carey Crane (1884), 370.
