Origin of the word "Gizmo" (speculative/woolgathering)

IIRC, my Dad (d. 1960), who was USNA 1940, at Pearl Harbor in 1941 (on the
Pennsylvania), and in the rest of the Pacific war, MIT 1949, used the word
gizmo.
