-SS -> -ST?

[Barbara Need]

Heard during the reports concerning Chicago's bad weather last week:

"it is worst out west" where I suspect that the speaker meant to say
that it was "worse out west". Both readings are possible, or course,
but in the context of the report (bad in the city, worse out west),
the comparative seemed more right.
