Nobody's Perfect Dept.

Sorry about "Brittish". The double "t" is the new English spelling going to
be offered by the UK's Simplified Spelling Society (unless they exclude
proper names). I am not in favor of changing tradspel. It's been tried and
failed. But a simple English friendly phonetic spelling is very useful.

Many of my positions on USA phonology are not the same in UK dialects. The
late British linguist Peter Ladefoged wrote me saying that for ing/ink it's
mostly eeng/eenk in USA but not in UK, according to a graduate students
testing at UCLA. Also my position on diphthongs may be different in UK
dialect. Thus, folks in UK may have strong feelings about my positions. But
this is USA dialect.

If you were a researcher as I was, knowing the background of you test
participants is crucial. Knowing the background of us all is a very good
thing.
