Thanks to Barry for his valuable posting.  Here's an early citation from
Georgia:

1884 _Telegraph and Messenger_ (Macon, Ga.) 10 Dec. 2 (America's
Historical Newspapers)  Mr. Thrasher, they all agree, was the man who
deliberately went up and angrily shook the railing that protects the Man
on the Monument in his quiet moments.  And not only shook he the railing,
but he shook his fist and swore until the light burned blue and dim, and
spat upon his hands, and drawing a line in the sand dared the old soldier
to come down and cross it.
