"cleaned his clock" Antedating to 1946

I couldn't find anything in the archive, but maybe didn't search enough?

HDAS has 1959(but notes that it was referring to WWII).

"Solvay cleaned his clock in that race and forced him to be satisfied with a three-way tie for second place."

The writer was a sports columnist, if that makes any difference.
