I agree also. I think I first became aware of this trend in the ' 70s.

I agree. When I was growing up, the boys were John and Mike. Now they're all Jonathan and Michael. No one was ever Michael unless his mom was pretty angry with him.

Shortening and nicknaming seems to be less common now than fifty years ago.
Perhaps due to more parental management of kids' lives.
