-stein names: -stine, or -steen?

On Oscar Hammerstein-- the composer Milton Babbit (himself Jewish from
Mississippi) told me when I was working on a Sondheim play in which Sondheim
mentions his family's friendship with Hammerstein,  that the pronunciation
Hammerstein insisted on was with the vowel of "twine" where I had been saying it 'steen"
I figured Milton must know because he was one of Sondheim's teachers and knew
a lot of the other Broadway composers.
