Less noticed was her decision to leave other pro–de Blasio figures out in
the cold. James, whose most high-profile stance has been her opposition to the
massive Atlantic Yard arena project, was shut out altogether in the awarding
of committee leadership posts. "I am bloodied but unbossed," James said last
week, echoing the late Shirley Chisholm.

"Bloodied but unbowed" was used in the recent NYC transit mess. I thought it
was older than 1904.
...
New York City Council Member Letitia James has used "bloodied but unbossed,"
and the Village Voice said that this echoes Shirley Chisholm. Chisholm's
book was titled "Unbought and Unbossed." The phrase pre-dated Shirley Chisolm
and was used by New York City Mayor Victor Impellitteri. "Unbought and
unbossed" was also used in the Presidential campaign of Warren Harding (1920) and the
campaign of La Guardia (1933).

Judge Grossman evoked the first applause when he mentioned the name of Mr.

"Each of them," he said, "was nominated solely by the petitions of the

In an attempt to attain party harmony, Mr. DeSapio offered Mr. Impellitteri
a Democratic nomination for Supreme Court Justice with oral assurance of a
Liberal party endorsement after Mr. Impellitteri had announced his intention to
run for Mayor on an independent ticket. Mr. Impellitteri's refusal of this
offer enabled him to run as the "unbossed and unbought" candidate of the
independent Experience party. He defeated Ferdinand Pecora, former Supreme Court
Justice, the candidate of the Democratic and Liberal parties, by a plurality of
 235,824.
