The Briticism that used to boggle me was "outwith" for "without."

marked as northern dialect.

and that's _The Remington Set_, a 1976 thriller by "John
Charlton" (Martin Woodhouse), not "Remington Steele". english crooks
and cops, but i haven't found out more specific details.
