"ICE CREAM SUNDAY" AT HUYLER'S
...
It's Sunday, so what better time for a "sundae" re-check? The new Kansas
City Times material shows a "sundae" from 1900, but 1890s cites are rare.
...
The Huyler's (NYC) information is interesting. Huyler's was famous in New
York City and served ice cream sodas in 1889 and "ice cream Sunday" by at least
1901, as below.

The hostess herself makes the chocolate sauce on her own chafing dish, and,
when poured over the vanilla cream it resembles an "Ice Cream Sunday," such as
served at Huyler's, only, if possible, more delicious.

Mr. Huyler's first business was a shop in Broadway near Eighteenth Street,
where one might buy candy and ice cream. Money commenced to come in at once.
Mr. Huyler saved the profit and put it back into the business. The original
store was opened in 1874. In many cases Mr. Huyler made the candy himself and
sold it over the counter himself. A few years later he opened three other
shops, another in Manhattan, one in Brooklyn, and oone in Albany. Huyler's candy
had begun to make a reputation.
