That was carelessness on my part.  I misread the OED entry for "ambiance,"
thinking it meant the term was restricted to (graphic) art crit.
My point remains, insofar as I suspect that many speakers do not recognize
that "ambient" & "ambience" are well-established  English words now that
legitimately claim an Anglo pronunciation.
