Juneteenth (1903, 1907, 1908)

I've never heard the so-called "full form," Juneteenth Day, though, as
y'all know, I'm a black native of Texas, who was so young when he
celebrated his first Juneteenth that he has no memory of it..

The cite containing the phrase "our colored" reminds me of a couple of
happenings in the Army.

The jukebox had the rock-a-billy tune, Red River Rock, on it. When
Gitte, one of the B-girls, was asked about this, she replied, "We have
that song in all of our colored bars."

One night, Radio East Berlin, the only military station broadcasting
R&B and other black- American music at the time, played the version of
the anti-lynching song, "Strange Fruit," by Billie Holiday. A
colleague exclaimed, "Jesus! I hope that none of our colored GI's are
listening to this!" (He was so accustomed to seeing me around that he
had forgotten that *I* was a colored GI.)

Oddly enough, the best station for black-American music was Radio
Luxembourg. It even played the at the time apocryphal "If You See
Kay," by Memphis Slim.
