Am 95% certain ( i.e., there's a slim chance) that I saw this gag in a World War I context, written in 1918, or at least before WWII..

Years ago I heard a sports broadcaster boast "I can speak French --
Chevrolet coupe, how about that!" (or words to that effect) I
suppose that this is an ancient gag?
