More goodies from Thomson-Gale's 19th Century US Newspapers...
sideburns (OED2 1887, Popik 1882)
1876 _St. Louis Globe-Democrat_ 7 Oct. 4/6 Sergeant Boland, of the
Police Department, returned from the "crooked" country yesterday. He
has been out after points about the James Boys, and while there he
raised a fine pair of side burns.
1877 _Inter Ocean_ (Chicago, Ill.) 16 Mar. 4/6 I think he is sandy,
milk-and-water looking, with light blue eyes, and "side burns."
1878 _Milwaukee Daily Sentinel_ 9 Jan. 8/2 His hair stood out
defiantly like porcupine's quills, and his pumpkin-colored whiskers
gave token that they had been cherished carefully and reared after the
fashion of the English sideburns.
