GAY-BASHING query

I'll stay away from the question immediately at hand, but will note
that searching the NYTimes & WashPost in Proquest, limiting to the
headlines, it looks as if expressions on the line of xxx-bashing came
into vogue in the mid 80s.  I notice "dissident-bashing", with ref. to
the USSR, from 1978; Japan-bashing, 1982; U. N.-bashing, 1983; Court-
bashing, economist-bashing, Schultz-bashing & Fed-bashing in 1984.
