The translation of Philadelphia as "brotherly love" predates Penn's
founding of
the city, in Ingelo, Nathaniel, 1621?-1683.
Bentivolio and Urania in four bookes / by N.I. D.D. 1660
Bib Name / Number: Wing / I175 and I179
No. pages: 2 v. ([30], 283; [20], 385, [17] p.) Index entry: Philadelphia,
Brotherly Love. [EEBO]
As a guess, Penn may have been influenced by the account of Philadelphia, Asia
Minor, in Apocalypse of John 3:7 f.
