No surprises here:
2006 _ Wikipedia_ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lord_of_the_Nutcracker_Men : There, his teacher, Mr. Tuttle, tutors him on classic literature, mainly the Illiad. They both draw direct parallels between the events of World War I and the events of Homer's novel.
2006 _TV.com: Gil Bellows_ http://www.tv.com/gil-bellows/person/1359/summary.html : In 1996, Gil played himself in Al Pacino's documentary movie titled "Looking for Richard," based on William Shakespeare's novel.
2004 Louise Read & Simon Read_Learning Italian in Italy: The Essential Guide to the Best Language Schools and Universities_ (Oxford: How To Books) 258: In Homer's novel The Odyssey, Ulysses fought the Cyclops at Mt. Etna.
2004_Literature Network Forums_ http://www.online-literature.com/forums/showthread.php?t=7133 (Feb. 20): It is good to read Paradise Lost to understand many references that can be find in literature following Milton's novel. Plus its always cool when you can use a reference from Paradise Lost.
1990 _The Cook, The Thief_ (Usenet: rec.arts.movies) http://groups.google.com/group/rec.arts.movies/msg/6f8c6df8f513931d?dmode=source (May 14) : Halfway through The Cook I couldn't help but think of Dante's 'Divine Comedy.' I think using the hierarchical structure presented in Dante's novel (viz. the progression of the different levels of Hell) transposes
well onto Greenaway's model.
And my current favorite:
2001 Gene A. Plunka "The Jean-Claude van Itallie Papers in the Department of Special Collections and Archives at Kent State University," in _Resources for American Literary Study_ XXVII 122: The Odyssey: A Musical Theater Piece (27 Oct. 1990), adaptation of Homer's novel includes three drafts.
(Note: Prof. Gene A. Plunka "received his Ph.D. in comparative literature from The University of Maryland [in 1978], where he specialized in modern and contemporary drama." He is currently Professor of English at the University of Memphis.)
