Merkins--(origin in metanalysis)

Using spellweb.com for word frequency (use google), I see counts for
american = 51,200,000
americans = 12,500,000
merkin = 79,100
merkins = 5,530
mercin - 551
mercins - 346
merican = 82,3000
mericans = 8,680
So some folks do spell the word "merkin(s)." Basically, I've never heard an
American say nor spell "merkin(s)". I have seen and Australian spelled
"merkin" once, and then here once. Was the speller here an American?
