German Chocolate Cake, Texas Hash (January 1957)

We all know that it's not German, that the name comes from "German's
Chocolate" and a man named German, and that a recipe was published in a Dallas
newspaper in 1957 that popularized the thing.

However, this book is from January 1957, so there goes that theory...Lots  of
nice kolache recipes here.

_German Chocolate Cake_
2 1/2 cups flour
2 cups sugar
1 cup butter or crisco
4 eggs, separated, whip whites and fold in last
1 cup buttermilk\
1 teaspoon soda
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 whole German chocolate bar melted in 2 tablespoons water

Melt chocolate in water, mix sugar, butter and egg yolks and add the cooled
chocolate. Add the dry ingredients alternately with buttermilk. Fold in the
stiffly beaten egg whites last.

Filling:
1 box powdered sugar
1/2 cup butter
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 teaspoons of chocolate or cocoa (dry)
4 tablespoons black coffee
If too stiff, add black coffee to make of spreading consistency.

_Texas Hash_
2 large onions, sliced
2 green peppers, sliced
3 tablespoons shortening
1 pound hamburger
2 cups canned tomatoes
1 cup cooked rice
1 teaspoon chili powder (or to suit taste)
Salt and pepper as desired
...
Melt the fat in skillet, saute the sliced green peppers and onions until
tender. Add hamburger, and cook until there is no pink left in the meat,
stirring with a fork to crumble the meat. Add tomatoes, rice, and seasonings.
Arrange in a greased baking dish and top with bread crumbs. Brown slowly in a  350
degree oven. Serves four.
