oh my, yes.  the names of american (and canadian) institutions of
higher education are endlessly baffling to foreigners.

Miami University is in Oxford, Ohio (the University of Mississippi,
or Ole Miss, is in Oxford, Mississippi; as far as i can tell, there
is, thank god, no Oxford University or University of Oxford in the
u.s. or canada), on the Miami River.

Miami University and Ohio University both predate OSU by some years.
indeed, both expected to be picked as ohio's land-grant university
and were apparently mightily pissed off when a brand-new school was
created for this purpose in columbus.
